Photoreceptor cell

Photoreceptor cells are specialized neurons in the retina that convert light into electrical signals; the two main types are rods and cones.

Photoreceptor cells transduce light into neural signals.

Types

  • Rod cells — high sensitivity, low light.
  • Cone cells — color vision in bright light.

They synapse onto Retina bipolar cell neurons.
