Inhibitory synapse
An inhibitory synapse reduces the likelihood that the postsynaptic neuron will fire an action potential, typically via GABA or glycine.
An inhibitory synapse decreases postsynaptic excitability.
Mechanism
Neurotransmitters such as GABA open channels that hyperpolarize the membrane, opposing excitatory input from cells like the Bipolar neuron.
